End of May

Tomorrow is June 1.  What happened to May?  Things are flying along here.  There are tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, melons, and peppers on the plants already.  Hopefully there will be some good early harvests of these.  Just started another round of melons to go out into the field, and placed about 180 cucumber and 150 tomato plants into the ground in Annville.  That's in addition to what is in the hydroponic system in Lebanon.  Have another 600 cucumber plants that will be ready in a few weeks for transplant.

The hydroponic strawberries have been yielding lower than expected.  This is fine as we have had plenty of strawberries to eat, but we really wanted to sell them.  Maybe the day-neutral varieties will put out more berries later on this Summer.

The hydroponic table has been working great.  So great in fact that it became the buffet table for a number of groundhogs.  We lost all the lettuce in the course of about two days, along with the Swiss chard, celery, and cilantro.  The groundhogs have subsequently been dealt with, and we will be putting a wire mesh under the table to keep them from getting up onto it for the next round of lettuce.

The larger hydroponic system seems to be working very well for peppers and the vine crops.  There are peppers on the plants in the tunnel, and the cucumber plants have been producing for about a week in fits, hopefully more substantial production will begin soon.

Overall, the hydroponics are performing better than expected.  We are anxious to sell some systems to other people so they can enjoy it as much as we do.  It's really fun to see plants grow from what looks like just water.
